What is The Connection Conundrum?
In schools around the world, a crisis is growing: students are disengaging, teachers are burning out, and communities are fracturing under competing priorities. Despite overwhelming evidence that meaningful connection underpins both academic success and wellbeing, schools continue to treat connection-building as a "nice-to-have" rather than essential work.
I call this The Connection Conundrum. It is the paradox of knowing connection matters yet consistently prioritising everything else. Like any great endeavour, success in education depends on trust, collaboration, and shared purpose. Through this book I aim to show you how you can navigate the challenges of modern schooling by placing connection at the centre of everything you do.
This book, its six parts and twelve chapters, isn’t about waiting for permission but acting with intention. It’s about empowering everyone to lead when formal leadership can’t (yet). For the teacher shouting into the void, the aspirational middle leader building momentum, and anyone tired of waiting for “someday,” this book is here to climb with you.
“Each step you take, no matter how small, brings us closer to a world where connection thrives and communities flourish. The solution begins with you because this is a puzzle that, once solved, will reshape everything for the better.”
— Matt Pitman

"This brilliant, practical and heartfelt resource for every school centres connection where it truly belongs: at the heart of teaching, learning and inclusion. With thoughtful insights into Universal Design for Learning, Cognitive Load Theory and restorative practices, it helps educators shift from a mindset of ‘how do I manage all these needs?’ to ‘how can I create space for every learner to belong and succeed?’ It’s not about more work; it’s about doing what truly matters: more human connection. A must-have for any educator committed to creating a culture where all students feel seen, valued and empowered to thrive, especially in an AI-driven world where human connection matters more than ever."

"The Connection Conundrum is an absolute must-read for every educator! This book focuses on the importance of connection as the foundation to everything that occurs in the classroom. Matt Pitman uses the metaphor of climbing a mountain to encapsulate the work required to not only build but sustain a culture of connection, belonging and collaboration with our learners. This practical book highlights that connection and belonging must be purposefully planned for, implemented and sustained over time. The message is clear: every classroom teacher can have a positive impact on school culture, starting with the learners in their classroom."

"Matt Pitman nails it again with The Connection Conundrum. He summarises it so elegantly: 'While we often celebrate the standout moments or exceptional educators, it’s the daily, deliberate actions of teachers, the tiny pushes, that truly move education forward. The greeting at the door. The patient pause before reacting. The extra check-in. These moments rarely earn headlines, but they shape lives. They change classrooms. Over time, they shift entire cultures.' Add it to your reading schedule!"

"A lovely broad romp across an expansive coverage of practice principles that can be used to make a classroom a site for cultural leadership and connection cultivation. Can serve as a wonderful overview for a range of theoretical bases for approaches congruent with a connection approach to learning. Written in a floral and dense style that balances the personal with the professional and engages with small visual flourishes and metaphors that make this complexity clearer."

"In The Connection Conundrum, Matt Pitman invites us to reimagine school as a place of deep, lasting connection. He writes with warmth and clarity, offering practical tools to rebuild trust, strengthen relationships and cultivate belonging. Grounded in research but easy to engage with, the book encourages both reflection and action. It reminds us that connection isn’t something extra. It’s foundational to student engagement, teacher wellbeing and school-wide success. It’s a quiet call to slow down, look up and lead with intention. Every educator must read this."

"The Connection Conundrum comes at a critical juncture in education. In a world dominated by discussions around AI and the increasing loss of human connection due to digital devices, this book is the kind of practical, professional reading that all teachers need to read. Regardless of whether you have been teaching for 20+ years, are in the early stages of your career, or are a pre-service teacher, it provides a set of timeless, practical waypoints for teachers to flourish and build stronger connection in our schools."

"The significance of The Connection Conundrum is that it extends the conversation begun in The Connection Curriculum. The first book highlighted why connection matters. This second book demonstrates how teachers can actively create it, with courage and consistency, every day. I recommend this book to teachers who want to shape culture from their classrooms, to middle leaders guiding teams, and to senior leaders committed to empowering agency across their schools. Read alongside Pitman’s first book, it shows a clear evolution in his work, from identifying the challenge of disconnection to providing a practical roadmap for addressing it."
